Leaving Wiesbaden …

It was an uneventful past few days. Greg and l had Nepalese lunch with traditional monos yesterday.

Then a relaxing walk back to Greg and Monic’s place. We saw a funky little car on our walk back.

A small three wheeler

Then l waa up early this morning to get ready to leave by train to Freiberg. Breakfast over and several coffees with Greg watching an episode of Air Crash Investigations then it was time to finish packing.

A quick car ride to the train station to wait for my train. Here it comes …

Then a quick goodbye and l settled in for my ride.

I hope this is my seat

Next stop is Freiburg. It’s only a few hours by train and l should arrive at 2pm. The train has quite a few empty seats.

It’s a foggy day. A photo as we crossed the Rhine.

The train is really smooth as we slip along at 129km/h.

The fire part of the train ride is through a wine region.

I probably shouldn’t be thinking of work! But, like in Australia, farmers in Germany also farm beneath high voltage powerlines!

The train travel over 250km/h at some points of the trip.

The farms in Germany don’t have fences dividing the property in separate paddocks. They also don’t seem to have boundary fences either.

I made it to Freiburg safely without any trouble.

Then a short walk to the place l’m staying for the next few days.

This is my room

The kitchen area has a fridge and a dishwasher. The bed looks comfortable too.

Then there’s the bathroom.

The room I’ve given faces onto a busy road. I hope the traffic settles down so l can get a good night’s sleep!

It’s 2:40pm and l’ve only had two slices of toast. I think l’ll head out to find a place to eat. I nearly got run over again looking in the wrong direction for oncoming traffic. I again step out thinking all was clear only to realise l should have been looking in the other direction. Yep! There was traffic coming.

I found my way to the old section of Freiburg. The old section centres around a large church.

A photo of a narrow back street.

I decided to have an ice cream while walking around.

For a minute, l thought I might have been having a stroke. Don’t panic! It was only an ice cream headache!

I found a nice traditional German place for a meal. I had the roast pork with traditional dumplings.

Then I went in search of a supermarket. Despite Google maps showing several near me. I couldn’t find one that was open.

I found a tram though!

I made my way back to my room for some planning for the next phase of my trip. Then l had a shower and now in bed hoping for a good night sleep!

  1. Barry, your trip looks absolutely amazing! Almost made it three whole weeks without thinking about transmission lines—impressive! 😄 I wouldn’t worry too much about the ice cream giving you a stroke though—I’d keep an eye on the gravy-to-meat ratio in Germany. Also, loving that Irish flat cap, perfect for travelling.
